Chapter 5

Tyler

Fear was there for a reason, and not just to make incompetent horror producers a quick buck. It was an early warning system, like the ‘oh shit’ music before something bad happens on a gritty detective show. Whenever I heard the droning minor-key strings, I knew it was my signal to quickly look away before unrelenting gore assaulted my eyes. Not as sheltered as some, I still had my limits, some of them more surprising than others.

Despite the bone-rattling blasts from the danger horn in my head, I made the call.

“GearHeads,” Jody said, as she answered.

“Jody, it’s Tyler, calling out sick. I’m not feeling too well, and I don’t want to infect everyone.”

“Good call, Firecracker; I’ll tell Dave so he doesn’t worry.”

“Thanks.”

Initial danger averted, it was time to jump right into the fire, knowing all the time how truly mad my idea to go back to the forest was. I’d already risked going there once, and he hadn’t even met my eyes.

A known adrenaline junkie—I wouldn’t have been a bike courier if I wasn’t—it went beyond even my usual limits. I needed to see him again, if for no other reason than to find out why I needed to see him again. It felt like some kind of burning desire or something even stronger—like a need deep inside me.

Decked out in my best band-patched denim, a hold-over from my days on the road, I got on my bike and let instinct take the handlebars, steering me straight and true back to where I needed to be. The trees soon started taking on a familiar quality like I’d somehow returned home.

Finally, my approach began, as I began creeping in the direction I’d seen him go on our last encounter. The woods could only be so deep around here, assuming I was going the right way. Silence reigned again, full of a subtle menace that hadn’t been here before. Even the birds stopped singing, like they sensed the approach of a predator.

Once I was halfway through the woods, there was no river to be seen, but the street made itself known once more via a line of neat houses in the distance. I took one step closer and suddenly my back was hitting the tree with an audible whack. I would have cried out if there was any air left in my lungs, but as it was, I only managed a soft yelp.

“Who are you?” the creature asked.

His muscles barely flexed, despite holding me solidly in a vice-grip. It didn’t hurt so much as unnerve me, since there no way to run or escape. I was totally in his thrall, and what happened to me was up to his judgement.

“Tyler,” I squeaked.

“What are you doing here? It’s really not safe.”

“I-I don’t know,” I confessed.

“You need to stay away if you want to live.”

“I can’t.”

“You can’t live?”

“I can’t stay away. I know I should, but it’s like a… a pull. I needed to come back, to see you again. I don’t even know how I got here.
